You are invited to join the Cascade Chapter PPFA
Sunday, September 19, 2010
Newberg Gallery
115 N. College St., Newberg, Oregon
As we welcome
PAUL MACFARLAND
Art Preservation Resources and Noted Educator

Paul will be presenting “Framing Works on Canvas”

In this talk, Paul will cover the intricacies of framing works of art on canvas: historic, contemporary and commercial. Topics include but are not limited to, glazing; measuring; identifying and rectifying problems; a review of the mediums used on canvas including oil, acrylic, encaustic and digital; recognizing the wide variety of canvases and their supports including traditional and contemporary bars and panels, stretching with hand, clamp and automated tools and machines; and of course, selecting the perfect frame for the artwork.
The program uses information obtained from the PPFA Guidelines for Framing Paintings on Canvas, 2010 revised edition, and from Framing Works of Art on Canvas, Standard Preservation Practice, Paul MacFarland (ISBN:978.0966318951) PFM Books-- first paperback printing 2009.
Believe it or not, this is often a very lively discussion and framers generally share their important comments and, at times find themselves debating topics. Participants’ experiences are an important attribute to our industries overall body of knowledge-- so bring your questions and share your successes.

Time: 10:00AM-3:00PM
PPFA Members: No Charge
Non PPFA Members: $8.00 payable at the door
Box Lunch/Refreshments

Results from the PRINT/OPEN Competition will be announced

Hello all,

I'm looking for a 65" piece of this moulding. It is 1-3/4" wide, 1-1/2" high & has a 1/2" rabbet. I am completing a few jobs for a shop that went out of business and this was the moulding that was selected and I don't know the supplier or anything other than what the pictures show. If you have any spare laying around I would be more than happy to purchase it or if you know who the supplier is and if it is still available I would be interested in knowing. Any help, will be appreciated. Thank you, Joe

Hi guys. I'm looking to get a couple of small prints framed and could use a little help. I love the look of borderless frames (the kind that basically sandwich the print between a hard backing and a piece of plexiglass, with clips around the edges holding it together), but I'm assuming they do nothing when it comes to protection. I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that have the borderless look but will still preserve the prints, or if I even have to worry about protecting them. They aren't particularly valuable, but I'd like to keep them in as good condition as possible. Any help would be great!

We have a customer that goes to auctions and brings us some interesting things to reframe for him. LOL - sometimes we need to run the air cleaner after we have opened some of these babies up.

Anyway, He came in the other day with four framed 5x7 Ansel Adams photographs. Each one was individually framed with a silver title plate (looks like a foil label, not a metal plate). They are photographs, not prints. There is no signature or marking on them. They are bonafide Ansel Adams as I have been able to find all but one of them on the internet, and the remaining one I have actually seen before.

Unfortunately, these have been glued/adhesed to a matboard so I can't lift them to look for markings on the backsides.

Anyone know enough about Ansel Adams that could tell me if these are worth a hoot? My guess is that with no signature or stamping, and them being glued, they are only worth what the customer values them to be.

Usually when I find these online, they are prints and the only thing I can say is that I wasn't able to find any of these that were photographs and that were 5x7.

Brenda sent an email to the Anseladams.com folks, but has never received a reply.

Any thoughts?

I know this is a strange question, but I have a friend that is looking for glass that does NOT block UV rays. I was told that the regular glass we would normally get blocks about 47% of the UV rays. He has some kind of decorative thing which includes glowing rocks. I guess using black lights or something. He wants to enclose with a glass front, but even the regular glass ruins the glow effect.

I told him that I would check with the experts on the Grumble. Is there some kind of glass that allows the UV to pass and where would we find it? What about regular acrylic? Does that block as much UV as regular glass?

I couldn't see any way that I could stretch the unstretched canvas, since I couldn't see anything to grab onto... yet the artist obviously stretched the others. They were pretty tight, too... and they were stretched on simple wood frames (i.e. no keying out possible).

So... how did he DO that? Is there a trick?

Does anyone have a pdf copy or a physical copy of Hugh's article on "Backing Boards and Mats"? This was a PFM Preservation Practices article, October 2008. I found the first page, but am missing the rest of the article.

I am putting together a packet of the most readable preservation articles for training purposes. I am including some of Jim's and David's articles, along with some from the Image Permanence Institute.

I am also asking trainees to read some of the newer PFM books.

Finding the right balance between a slow assimilation of information and overload is always a challenge. I would welcome training article suggestions.
